Let’s build a shed

It took only a few hours to erect the brand-new garden shed at Rye Community Food and Wildlife Garden in Love Lane on Saturday July 4, writes Kenneth Bird. The first volunteers to arrive laid out the foundation slabs, under the watchful eye of Dominic Manning, and by late afternoon it was all finished with the 1,000 litre water storage unit in position.

The purchase of the metal shed, rainwater tank and guttering were funded from a £1,631 grant awarded recently by Sussex Community Foundation from the Little Cheyne Court Wind Farm Community Fund, and other donations came from Alsfords and Stuart and Linda Harland. Meanwhile the broad beans are nearly ready for harvesting, as will be the potatoes, along with the garlic.

More blackthorn has been planted along the primary school boundary and other plantings include raspberries, two willows and a variety of brassicas. The apple trees are healthy and growing but, as in any garden, there is always work to be done. Working sessions are held on Saturday mornings between 9am and 12 noon and for further information contact ryegarden@hotmail.com, or write to Rye Community Garden c/o 14 Love Lane, Rye TN31 7NE
