Taking back control

Sonja Colman helps people find a healthy relationship with food. A nutritional therapist and food coach based in Rye she now works out of the newly renovated Nook hair salon in the town centre.

She believes mood plays a big part in what and how we eat, as she helps her clients take back control of their eating habits to find a healthy relationship with food. “There’s so much confusing information out there about what’s good and bad to eat, so I help navigate through all the noise and create an individual programme totally specific to each client. We talk about their personal situation and goals, before tackling unhealthy habits. By understanding what we eat and why it becomes possible to make changes.”

Sonja says she first became interested in food as a teenage vegetarian in the 1980s. “There were few options for me in supermarkets or restaurants as the meat quality was poor. My turning point was when I found out what went into sausages and burgers. Very unpleasant! So I started by giving those up. It really made me think about the animal as opposed to what was on my plate. My family were horrified I would not be able to maintain a balanced diet.”

Fifteen years later she enrolled in an evening course about nutrition, followed by further study in food science and professional cooking. She loves to experiment and learn about new dishes. “My favourite thing is work out how to introduce more plants into all my dishes and create healthy but delicious food every day. It’s got to taste good, but it also must look good as we tend to eat with our eyes. The anticipation of eating a lovely meal is a big part of the enjoyment of food as I explain to my clients, and it’s so good for a healthy digestion.”

Alongside supporting her clients with dietary changes, Sonja is also a qualified massage therapist focussing on Indian Head Massage. “It’s incredibly relaxing and a lot of people appreciate the fact it is seated with no need to remove any clothing! The combination of diet and massage absolutely supports our nervous systems with dealing with everyday stress and managing anxiety. It’s all part of creating a healthier way with food and a promoting more self-care.”
