Uncertain future for Nisa local

Rye News has been contacted by a Camber ‘local’ concerned about the future of the Nisa store. It followed a conversation with a member of staff at Camber Sands Holiday Camp shop.

The local supermarket currently operates 7 days a week from 8.00am-8.00pm each day, selling a wide range of branded and own label products. In addition to the usual fresh, frozen and tinned products there are snacks, sweets and drinks on offer, as well as cigarettes, alcohol, newspapers and lottery tickets.

Other lines include toys, games, beach wear, a gift shop area and an area with many items priced at £1 – the ideal facility for those on a self catering holiday, situated just a short stroll from the famous dunes.

But, it appears that the shop may be closing “sometime in the next 12 weeks” according to one staff member but the situation seems very unclear.

Rye News contacted the Nisa head office for a statement and their customer services department responded with the following:

“Thank you for your email regarding Nisa store, Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Park, TN31 7RL. Each store is an independent business and not owned or controlled by Nisa so therefore we do not have any further information at this time as to whether they intend to stop trading with Nisa. I understand this must be frustrating for you however, if you can contact the store directly, I am sure they will be more than happy to assist you further”.

Rye News then contacted the store and asked the question of a member of staff but as far as she knew, nothing had been decided as yet and that the situation was “up in the air”.

  1. Another sad indication that our local communities are dependent upon visiting trade, rather than those of us who live here. People who stay and visit generally have more disposable cash to spend on having a good time. Many small towns are lacking general everyday shops, such as butchers, greengrocers and ordinary bakers, which means we have to shop at supermarkets in the larger surrounding towns.
