Rye is one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in England. Narrow, cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses ooze old-world charm. Quirky museums, feudal inns, and old stone churches tell of the region’s chequered history.

The town hosts a variety of exciting events throughout the year that celebrate its rich history, culture, and vibrant community, including mayor making day and the town crier competition in October.

My husband Martin and I have created a YouTube channel so that we can share the videos of Rye and its special events that we have made over the last few years. It is called Showcasing Rye and we would like you to check it out and subscribe. This doesn’t cost you anything, but it helps to spread the splendid traditions of Rye to a wider audience.

Some of the videos showcase the traditional events that take place each year will be filmed this year.

Rye Bonfire Night – held in November, this is one of the biggest and most spectacular bonfire celebrations in Sussex. The event features a torchlit procession through the town, a dramatic bonfire, and a fireworks display. It’s a thrilling experience with a lively, festive atmosphere and the wonderful Ryebellion Drummers.

Rye Arts Festival – this annual event, typically held in September, is one of the most prestigious arts festivals in the region. It features a wide range of cultural activities, including classical music concerts, literary talks, theatre performances, and art exhibitions. The festival attracts high-calibre artists and performers from across the UK.

Rye International Jazz and Blues Festival – this takes place annually over the August bank holiday weekend, and brings world-class jazz, blues, and soul musicians to Rye. The town’s intimate venues provide a perfect setting for live music, and the event often includes open-air performances in the town’s beautiful surroundings.

Rye Bay Scallop Week – this is celebrated in February and is a must-visit for food lovers. Rye is famous for its fresh seafood, and this week-long festival showcases the best of the local scallops with special menus in restaurants, cooking demonstrations, and seafood-themed events.

We are looking forward to covering the Rye Christmas Festival. This festive event in December transforms Rye into a winter wonderland. Highlights include a Christmas market, carol singing, and a magical lantern procession through the streets. The town’s historic charm makes it a perfect backdrop for holiday celebrations. These events reflect the town’s vibrant community spirit and offer visitors a unique taste of Rye’s cultural and historical heritage.

  1. What a great idea! You might also consider expanding the channel (or starting new ones) for local villages with beautiful sights and lots of interesting things going on?

  2. Thank you for so many happy memories of Rye. I once owned a shop at Landgate.and my husband ran a charter fishing boat from Rye harbour.

  3. I’m an early subscriber to this excellent new YouTube channel. It’s good to have a home for such first class videography. It’s also handy to share films with friends who ask What’s Rye Been Up to Lately?
