Common Ground, a new exhibition opened on Friday, September 16 at the Rye Creative Centre. It was curated by Rowena Easton who is the art directer of Review of Sussex Arts magazine (ROSA) which reports on news of Sussex arts.

Rowena said: “It is very creative to put on a show of wonderful artists who work from their studios in the creative centre but it is also a challenge to decide how best to show the collective of twenty artists. It was such a varied collection, from experimental sculptures, jewellery and craftwork in natural dying techniques and many other artworks to be displayed, a challenge how to include everyone and make it a coherent show. I decided to come with an open mind to trust in finding the thread made to fit.”

And Rowan certainly managed to create an interesting and varied narrative, bringing together an eclectic creative tableau. Common Ground suggests to the viewer a distinctiveness of a local group of artists which makes the creative centre a special place where artists can express themselves and flourish in a productive environment. Rye Creative Centre unfortunately is at risk as the lease is running out soon. So it is really important to showcase the artists who have their studios in the building and visit the exhibition. Rowena Easton was the right person to chose as curator of Common Ground given her experience at the ROSA magazine. Philomena, artist member said of the magazine ROSA:”I have not come across any other art magazine like it – buoyant and so readable – I’ve found inspiration in every article.”
