Rail closure

The rail line to Hastings is closed for two weeks from tomorrow Saturday October 19. Work on the Ore tunnel means buses replacing trains between Rye and Hastings, and a weekday shuttle to Ashford during the day.

The closure is further complicated by the overnight roadworks which will affect the bus replacement service. Southern Railway gave this update to MarshLink Action Group (MLAG) on the arrangements put in place for the evening closure of South Undercliff. “We have been working with Highways to ensure we can run our rail replacement bus service during their roadworks. When these are in force (8pm – 6am every day) they’ll escort two minibuses for us for each departure through the closed section.”

The rail company also gave this advice for passengers. “Minibuses are not suitable for wheelchair users and others who cannot manage steps, so an accessible taxi will be also be placed on standby at Rye and Ashford. It would very much help us if customers called in advance to book assistance, on 0800 138 1016, but we will, of course, be there for anyone who turns up unannounced.”

Southern Railways has set up a dedicated website to help passengers plan journeys. You can find all the details about the replacement bus service and altered train times here.

Meanwhile the overnight roadworks on the A259 continue until November 8. The road is closed in places each weekday evening 8pm – 6am between the Skinners and Kettle O’ Fish Roundabouts.

Parking

Parking meter on Rye High Street

As expected, consultation on increasing charges for permits and on street parking in Rye has been given the go ahead by East Sussex County Council. A meeting at County Hall on Monday October 14 heard the cost of a two-hour ticket for on street parking in Rye could increase from 90p to £1.35.

The council will also seek views on a major overhaul of permit parking prices which ESCC says is “intended to incentivise sustainable forms of transport”. The proposals include introducing a new scheme which takes into account the C02 emissions of the vehicles tied to the permit. This new scheme could significantly increase costs for many permit holders.
