Last Wednesday October 16, Tilling Green Residents’ Association (TGRA) held its annual general meeting. Chair, Dan Lake, reported that three committee members had left the association just before the pandemic and another, sadly, had passed away. He thanked all of them for their hard work.

Next on the agenda was the election of executive officers and committee members. Dan Lake was re-elected as chair, Janet Sherwood was re-elected as treasurer and Donna Lake re-elected as secretary. Graham Ellis was elected as the new vice-chair and Joan Ridgers, Leigh Booth and Shirley Pankhurst all joined the committee.

The future was then discussed and Dan advised that they were hoping to have three notice boards installed around Tilling Green area and also a ‘Welcome to Tilling Green’ sign on the triangle outside the shop. Another idea that was mentioned was to find out if it was possible to remove the word “estate” from Tilling Green estate as no other estates in Rye have that word mentioned in their name: so why Tilling Green?

Rother District councillor Cheryl Creaser said she had been working on some of the issues residents are currently having with Southern Housing. Dan replied that one of the remits of the Association is to try and help residents with housing problems and he hopes that the TGRA will be able to get Southern Housing to run fortnightly surgeries like they used to at the Tilling Green Community Centre.

On Friday October 18, Tilling Green Residents’ Association chair Dan Lake, vice-chair Graham Ellis and Strongback productions artistic and executive director, Dominique Le Gendre, attended the Rother Voluntary Action (RVA) Annual General Meeting. They spoke about how they have put together an ambitious schedule of events for 2025 based in and around Tilling Green. Dan and Graham also spoke about their new group Tilling Green Events CIC which they have recently set up. They advised they are currently working with various experienced people from around Rye organising a three-day festival to be held at Tilling Green next August.

  1. Interesting to see the current thinking on removing the word Estate from Tilling Greens title, back in the 50’s and 60’s it was always known as the New Estate, the school was The Infant School and the playing field was The Dump.

  2. It is an absolute privilege to continue to support the amazing community at Tilling Green. Dan and the Team are extraordinary. I am so looking forward to all the good stuff planned for Tilling Green going forward. Cheers Cheryl
