Rye News is holding an Annual Meeting, open to all, on Friday September 4 in St Mary’s Centre, Lion Street (next to the Kino Cinema) at 6:30pm. This will report on progress with the community online newspaper, consider what is necessary to keep it going and invite contributions and new volunteers.
Rye News is a not for profit community interest company which was launched in May last year after a few months of testing and trying out the necessary online systems. During the experimental period of four months some 50 stories were published, increasing, over the next four months, to an average of over 50 stories each month. And in the last four months the average has been over 50 stories every fortnight.
At the top of each page on Rye News, you will see a link to our vision, last year, of what Rye News should be. The Annual Meeting will be an opportunity to test whether we are living up to that vision. And, below that, there are ways of submitting stories, events and letters – and we always need more of them.
The front page shows what Rye News publishes, whether it be news, opinions, or items about culture, sport or day-to-day to living. It includes regular columns like Movies and regular and irregular columnists covering younger interests, gardening and farming. Highlights from Rye News feature in each month’s copy of Fixtures which is delivered to every home in the local area.
However the Annual Meeting will give you the opportunity to tell us how we are doing and discuss how you can help us. Like many organisations in Rye we rely on volunteers and we rely on information circulating in the town – and we hope we are now an important part of keeping Rye alive.
