At a ceremony in Rye Town Hall on Tuesday October 13, Rae Festing from Rye, Mary Howse (Beckley) and Peter Hayman (Northiam) each received the British Empire Medal for services to the community. Officiating was Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex.

His Brighton office spokesperson Michaela Isaacs told our reporter: “This was a private occasion for the families, not open to the public because we don’t have the funding to invite local community representatives.  It would normally have taken place at the Brighton Pavilion as a royal palace, but on this occasion, as there were three recipients, Rye Town Hall was chosen for the venue”.
