Do you ever look at the state of the world and want to cry? If so, you may be interested in a unique job vacancy. Rex Swain, Rye’s much loved Town Crier, needs a deputy.

Everyone will know how hard Rex works. In the summer, barely a weekend goes by without his services being called on multiple times. Every big civic occasion sees Rex playing a central role. He is probably the most famous man in the neighbourhood. Local Sir Paul McCartney, who sang and played in a 60s’ band called the Beatles, comes way behind.

The duties of the new deputy town crier are multifarious. They include attending and crying at weddings and other events at the Town Hall as well as acting as the voice of Rye at multiple civic and community events.

According to the advertisement distributed through “Fixtures”, the deputy town crier will also act as the “responsible person” at Town Hall weddings and other ceremonies. This sounds like a service that could be sold around the world for an infinite price. Imagine taking along a “responsible person” to a party, the pub, even just back to your home.

For an application pack, email townhall@ryetowncouncil.gov.uk quoting TCD. Or call Town Clerk Richard Farhall for an informal chat about the role on 01797 223902.
