Getting excited on Saturday, February 13, to dress up and go back to the ’60s, I took some time to decide on a costume for the party planned to raise funds for the Rye and District Memorial Hospital.
Four outfits later I managed to cobble together something that would do, but also felt comfortable, as I had not worn a mini for some time. Then made my way to the Milligan Theatre at the Academy in Rye.
I had been told that there were at least 150 tickets sold and was looking forward to seeing what other people remembered about ’60s fashion.
On arrival an excellent band from the Studio School was playing ’60s songs and the air was buzzing with much laughter as people looked at the various outfits. It was very well organized. The hall was lovely, the tables had names on them so attendees knew where to get their seats, and there was a bar and an opportunity to buy raffle tickets. (My friend won tea for two at The George – a great present)
People were mingling and were having drinks while different musicians entertained until it was announced that the fish and chips were ready to be served. Apparently they came from Iden and were delicious.
During the meal an auction took place which included bling jewellery that I later saw being worn by the male winner, as well as earrings, a 60s dress, a vase and a poster.
We also had to decide who was the best dressed, ’60s style, and the price went deservedly to Frances Candy, our local professional tennis player and coach.
The fabulous Lindy Hoppers, after showing us how the ’30s street jazz dance was done, tried to teach some of us the steps and kicks which was hilarious..
The music, laughter and dancing continued until 11pm by which time my feet were hurting from being continuously on the dance floor enjoying the atmosphere.
Congratulations must go to Jane Conlin who organized this fun evening and her friends who helped. Jane Conlin is also on the committee of the Rye Arts Festival.
The net amount raised, after costs, is not yet known, but certainly it was a well worth while contribution to the wonderful work the Memorial Hospital in Rye does. Also, some events are not just about money, but also about giving supporters a fun night out, and it certainly was that.
