Rye Bonfire Society held a very successful Auction of Promises at the Mermaid Inn last week. Thanks to all those attending and spending they raised over £6,000 towards hosting this year’s Rye Bonfire, a record!
This magnificent amount will help towards staging Rye Bonfire this year, and helping local community groups.
Over 80 eclectic lots included original drawings of Captain Pugwash from John Ryan kindly donated by Priscilla Ryan, numerous offers of accommodation and meals in Rye, a flight to Le Touquet, a squeaky chicken, a 50 mile trip with Rye Community Transport, a bra fitting, cakes, fruit, kite buggy lesson, the honour of lighting the Rye Bonfire, Champagne Sabrage, a bottle of whisky signed by Boris Johnson and an original painting of Rye Bay by Rye Bonfire Vice-President and renowned artist Prince Rostislav Romanov.
Special thanks are due to Judith, Georgie, and all the staff of the Mermaid Inn for hosting the event, and to Jim Hollands for his auctioneering and cajoling on the night. Not forgetting Rita and Charlie for accounting, Ruth, Joan and Irene for all their hard work in sourcing such good auction items from the generous folk of Rye. Well done all!
