Rye Art Gallery (RAG) currently features two exhibitions of works of art for sale by local artists running until April 23, one of which was reviewed last week and is hosted in Gallery 3 at the back on the ground floor.
In Galleries 4 and 5, up the stairs to the right of the Richard Adams exhibition, Rye Society of Artists features works for sale from their members who live locally – and residents (but perhaps not visitors) will be familiar with many of the names on show.
A more recent “name” is the multi-talented artist, author and composer Dave McKean whose illustrated book Black Dog: The dreams of Paul Nash is also on display. Last year Dave “performed” the book’s subject matter in RAG as part of the Rye Arts Festival before it was performed in London as part of the commemorations of the First World War.
Paul Nash was the war artist nationally known for his landscapes and surrealist art who lived in Rye at one time.
The exhibition also features work by local architect and artist Andrew Blyth who designed the award winning gallery extension which houses the RSA exhibition, and his water colours are often seen at the RSA’s annual summer exhibition.
While Matt Hardman’s mixed media (top photo) may seem more modern to some, other familiar names such as Annie Soudain and Louis Turpin feature more traditional scenes in a single medium.
