With all this hot and wet weather keen gardeners should be thinking ahead to the Rye Flower and Vegetable Show on Saturday August 19 at 2pm at the Rye Community Centre on Conduit Hill.
There are more than 50 categories for entry from the longest runner bean and the heaviest squash to the funniest-shaped vegetable. There are also categories for flowers, cookery and photography as well as separate awards for children. A full list of the entry categories can be found in this year’s booklet that can be picked up at the Bargain Box, 37 Cinque Ports Street. The booklet contains helpful tips on how best to present your produce and this year the front cover and the accompanying posters you will see around town were expertly designed by pupils at Rye Community Primary School.
The competition is open to everyone, not just those with allotments, though the winner of the Best Kept Allotment, as judged by the Mayor, will also be announced on the day.
The closing date for entries for the Flower and Vegetable Show is Friday August 18. Applications are at the back of the booklet or you can email ryeallotments@yahoo.co.uk to get your entry form.
