For the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Tuesdays in every month, Brede Art group holds Painting for Pleasure, “an Art Group for like – minded people who enjoy doing their own form of art”, as described on their Facebook page. They meet from 9:30am in Brede Village Hall, and are open to new members, who need to bring their own materials and a piece of work that they want to do. A table and chair and coffee are supplied for the very small sum of £2 a week.

Wildlife caught in paint

This August Bank Holiday weekend, they held their annual exhibition in the Village Hall, to show the variety and quality of the work they are producing. Of course, this Tuesday Artists group does not have the membership of the Rye Tuesday Painters, but it has a selection of very competent and talented artists. This included silk paintings, with lovely colours and scarves on sale as well.

Set up in the spacious and light village hall, on a wonderfully sunny day, the visitor was given a warm welcome by some of the group’s members. This is a selling exhibition and some red dots showing sales could be seen around the hall. The exhibition, which does not include sculpture or ceramics, but did include other crafts, such as felt makers and silk scarves, had a number of beautiful flower and leaf studies,  some by Kathleen Loughton-Meads in watercolour (pictured left), others in mixed media and some of local wildlife, like Hare two by Pat d’Warte. A real sense of fun in others of the paintings – Ladies who lunch and The Paddlers were two examples – gave the exhibition a quite different feel to the more serious ones lately reported on in Rye, but this in no way impacted on the quality of the exhibits.  It was a real pleasure to visit.
