After last year’s dip in Film Club attendance figures we are now averaging 30 or so members at each screening. Over the summer we’ve screened Lion, An American in Paris and Their Finest which are all great films and were well received. Our autumn/winter line up includes a French thriller, a forgotten story of black American female mathematicians working for Nasa and a World War II story set in Warsaw Zoo!
Friday October 6– Scribe (2016 – 91 minutes) (French language with English sub-titles) Francois Cluzet (The Untouchables, Tell No One, Little White Lies) stars as Duval, a mild mannered book-keeper who is hired by a mysterious organisation to transcribe telephone conversations.
He is only too happy to have the work and some stability again in his life, but he soon gets sucked into a nightmare of uncertain loyalties. A fine political thriller filmed with flair as only the French could do.
Friday November 3 – Hidden Figures (2016 – 127 minutes) This is the true story of three black female mathematicians employed by Nasa as “human computers” to work on the space programme in the 1960s. Set against a still somewhat segregated society their story can finally be told and credit given where due. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae as Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, it is a heartwarming story of three previously unsung American heroines.
Friday December 1 – The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017 – 127 minutes) Set in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation, this true story follows the attempts of Polish couple Antonina and Jan Zabinski to protect their animals and ensure their safety despite aerial bombing of the city and shortage of food. But, they also work secretly to give sanctuary to Jews escaping from the Warsaw Ghetto, following the German invasion of September 1939. Their perilous work enabled an estimated three hundred Jews to escape whilst safe houses were found for them. Starring Jessica Chastain and Daniel Bruehl. ‘Great acting and great story-telling’.

St Michael’s Hospice are running a Open Air Movie Night on Saturday September 23.
It is the first time that the Hospice has put on this type of event at The Hub, Quarry Farm (in Bodiam) – the perfect setting for a showing of the classic 80s film, The Princess Bride! Tickets are £10 and must be booked in advance via Eventbrite. All ticket sales go directly to the Hospice to support the care that St Michael’s Hospice provide to adults in Hastings and Rother, who are affected by a progressive life-limiting illness or bereavement.
