With the Rye Arts Festival gearing up for its first weekend a highlight will be a visit to The Monastery on Conduit Hill which will be hosting a unique exhibition entitled Chiaro Scuro, the Power of Light and Dark.
For those of you who didn’t manage to get a place on the sold-out tours of The Monastery laid on as part of the Festival, Alex MacArthur will be opening the magnificent 14th-century building on additional days. You can visit by invitation only at the weekends and by appointment in the weekdays from 1pm to 6pm for the duration of the festival. Please contact Alex to arrange a visit.
The Monastery is the permanent home and showroom of Alex MacArthur Interiors and contains an amazing collection of artefacts and antiques drawn from around world including furniture, pictures, mirrors, lighting and objects, ranges from the 17th century to the 1980s.
The temporary exhibition, Chiaro Scuro, the Power of Light and Dark, displays the work of 10 visiting artists and sculptors including: Christina Grant, John Bartlett, Dion Salvador Lloyd, Mark Charlton, Friedrich Michael Schreiber, David Harkins, Julie Nelson, Andrew Viner, Guido Maestrello, and Huw Willams.

I tried to go on one of the tours but they were booked out. Thanks to this article I had a second chance and I was lucky enough to go today.
I would strongly recommend a visit to anyone. Alex MacArthur has achieved something extraordinary. It is hard to describe the interior, my friend and I had our mouths open in wonder for most of our tour. The scale, the variety, the beauty of the contents and the restoration work are incredible.
This building’s latest incarnation under Alex is a new and worthy chapter in its fascinating history.
