The Rye Creative Centre in New Road is presently showing an interesting exhibition ‘Working Drawings’ by Jeremy Nelson. It started on October 7 and goes on to October 28. Wednesday October 11 till Saturday 14 it will be open from 10am-2pm. Other days by appointment. To understand the drawings, one has to talk to Jeremy, who is an “artist/maker” living in Romney Marsh, about his work and his inspirations.
His work brings together the rigour of architectural drawings with studies from organic forms, explaining his fascination and passion for the natural world. The drawings are beautifully detailed. Some are earlier works which were produced for community projects and buildings. His recent work features, as part of the collection, ‘Nature Moves’, showing drawing and stone carving studies that reveal a more abstract method and include images of water, shells, fossils and wheat.
Jeremy carves mostly out of granite but also alabaster. His main objective is to show the evolutionary process of the environment we live in. In the exhibition he has drawings that show the beginning of a garden design which will be built below ground with a spiral staircase coming to the surface, fascinating.
There was a photo album to show his other projects on the go. Several beautiful large and small sculptures with engravings of plants or fossils which will be placed in a group in an appropriate space/place once finished. It is difficult to describe the pieces so I would recommend people who are interested in stone carving to go and see his work.
Jeremy is planning to lead a workshop for families and adults during the exhibition run. The first will be October 21 – ‘The Willow Whale’. It is designed to create something beautiful, celebrating team work, nature and heritage, encouraging us to think about the environment and interaction within it. It is free of charge but booking is necessary.
The second event is on Saturday October 28 for adults – ‘Theories and Perspective’. The price for the day is £30, tea and coffee included. There will be a midday break, so bring along a packed lunch. If interested e-mail: contact@jeremynelson.com or go to the website or telephone- 07784793574
