The Stables Theatre in Hastings Old Town presented an inspiring evening of dance from the Flamenco Express group last Sunday, October 29.
The group was formed in 1994 and ran the UK’s first dedicated flamenco theatre in London. In 1996 they set up a permanent base in the Greenwich Dance Agency and have been touring ever since.
Flamenco is music, sensuality and history all rolled into one, says the group and on their website they describe it as “the fiercest expression of the human spirit ever devised”. Flamenco Express aims to find the best artists available and give them total artistic freedom with no constraints.
There were four performers, La Joaquina, Chris Clavo, Emilio Ochando and Juan Debel. The Spanish guitar player was wonderful, as was the singer, and both led the dancers, who were extraordinary with their footwork, body movements and their skill with castanets.
The Stables Theatre is housed in an 18th-century building which over the years has developed into a modern raked 126-seat auditorium.
This weekend sees a production of Othello performed by the Shakespearian theatre company, Bowler Crab Productions, on November 3 and 4. The same production then comes to Rye
