The Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) has awarded its Kent Group the 2018 Cinque Ports Hundred to be held from May 26 to 28.
The Cinque Ports Hundred will be a semi-linear walk, starting in Hastings and finishing at the Duke of York’s Royal Military School, just outside Dover. The route will follow coast and countryside, with walkers visiting all the Cinque Ports (Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich) plus the Cinque Port Ancient Towns of Winchelsea and Rye, and the Cinque Port Limbs of Tenterden, Lydd, Folkestone and Deal. At Sandwich the route will turn back to Dover.
Every year the LDWA organises a 100-mile cross-country challenge walk in a different part of the UK. Over the Bank Holiday weekend some 500 walkers will attempt to complete the Cinque Ports Hundred, all within a 48-hour time limit.
The walkers will range from people in their 20s to some who will be over 80. The average age will be around 50 and most will have completed at least one previous 100-mile walk. Many will be supported by their families and several will visit the area for the first time.
They start at Sussex Coast College on Saturday May 26 from 10am onwards and the first group may be expected in Rye around 12:45 pm as they travel on to Wittersham and Tenterden and thence to New Romney.
