Rye Harbour Nature Reserve will be hosting its regular ‘Walking Festival’ looking at coastal plants in and around the Nature Reserve this Saturday, May 26, between 10.00am – 12.30pm.
You will learn how the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve’s shingle plants cope with their dry, windy and salty environment and also spot a few rare birds if you are lucky.
Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has many special habitats: shingle, saltmarsh, saline lagoons, grazing marsh and reedbed. Over 500 different flowering plants have been recorded on the reserve with a number being rare or endangered. Rare plants you will see in flower at this time of the year will include the Sea Kale which has large cabbage like leaves and flowers that smell of honey, and the invasive Alexanders, which were introduced by the Romans because all its parts are edible, including its black seeds.
The walk will start at Rye Harbour car park at 10am. While it is free to attend, donations are welcomed. Details of other walks can be found here.
