If you’ve ever fancied trying out a game of bowls, Rye Bowls Club is a friendly club which welcomes new members and is located on The Fair Salts in Fishmarket Road.
The club is a registered member of the Mermaid league – members play league and friendly games from April to October as well as the enjoyable members’ Friday Roll-Up. The year started with our Spring Fling and Yardstick which is an all-day event open to all members (visitors are welcome). There is a major tournament each year and neighbouring clubs submit teams to compete in this entertaining all-day event. A percentage of the profits is donated to local charities.
The year concludes with the Final Fling, again open to all members. In addition, there are several social occasions through non-playing months. New members are always welcome and will be well looked after thanks to our “buddy” scheme. No special or expensive equipment is required when you begin – all you need is a pair of flat-soled shoes.
The club has a wide selection of bowls for beginners to use and all other equipment is provided. All new members are encouraged to play friendly matches for the club before moving on to more competitive league games. There are typically three to four matches each week during the summer months, each one lasts three hours on average, with travelling time (to away matches) on top of that.
There were two matches last weekend: on Saturday June 9, Rye played a friendly match against Cranbrook. It was a good fun game of four teams each with a very close result which Rye won by 60 points to 58. On the Sunday, Rye played a Mermaid league match against Iden and again Rye won, 77 points to 55, to put them 2nd in the league.
