Remember the seemingly never ending convoy of classic cars which made their way from Camber to Rye last year? A truly spectacular sight as the cavalcade, having left from Pontins in Camber, arrived in Rye, passing through the Landgate arch, along the high street and down to the station car park. After two circuits of the town they parked up, ready for the waiting crowds to admire and the judges to compare.
Masses of chrome everywhere, huge crowds of well-wishers and petrol heads, and drivers and passengers kitted out in costume of the period with the sun shining down on everyone, what a fantastic day.
Regrettably, we will have only our memories to savour as the Rhythm Riot which was staged at Pontins in Camber has been forced to relocate following the totally unexpected closure by Britannia Hotels of this popular holiday destination enjoyed by so many people over the years.
After celebrating its 25th anniversary here in Rye, Rhythm Riot has now secured the Vauxhall Holiday Park in Great Yarmouth where their 26th year will be celebrated from October 3-7.
Camber and Rye will miss the additional trade this event brought, as well as the thousands of extra visitors. We won’t see the cavalcade of classic cars again but, it was good while it lasted.
Congratulations to Great Yarmouth and sad commiserations to Camber and Rye.
We have been assured that Pontins will not become a migrant camp but the pressing question everyone wants an answer to is what is going to happen to the Pontins site now?
