Cricketers go down but stay up
The aim of the 2014 cricket season for Rye Cricket Club was to secure its status in the Sussex Cricket League for 2015 after securing promotion from the East Sussex League in 2013 and on Saturday that aim was achieved. For a small club like Rye on the eastern extremity of the county the sustaining of county league status has been a challenge both on and off the field.
Rye News boules in
Petanque may come from France, but all are welcome to "boule" along (with or without a beret) to the Strand Quay on Saturday September 13 from 2pm for the Rye News Petanque competition even if you have not played before. Boules will be provided, teams will be assembled (where necessary) and the organisation will be flexible. Dennis Leeds-George reports on the Sports page.
Six aside coming soon
With cricket coming to an end, and the nights beginning to close in, you may fear the worst - too much television - but fear not as the excitement of another football season is here. ... and it is only six a side.... and open to all ages and abilities
Ten seconds to defeat
Harvesting, holidays and weddings meant the 2nd XI only had 10 players, six of whom were first-timers, and so they lost to Crowhurst Park. But the Under-16s (who were mostly under 15 and 14) came second in their Division in the Sussex Juniors Cricket Festival. Martin Blincow reports and bowls 1 for 22
Hard lessons bear fruit
After a long run of defeats since early July, Rye's 1st Xl learnt from those hard lessons and Craig Pierce's bowling hammered Henfield on the Salts, moving Rye closer to their mid-table end of season target. Martin Blincow reports
Tough lessons at crease
While they can't call a halt to the August harvest, cricket captains might be tempted to ban weddings. Rye 1st XI went to Portslade with a team much diminished by these events - and the 2nds went from high hopes to a whimper at home
Beaten by a one-man band
Rye Ist XI entertained League leaders Steyning at the Rye Cricket Salts, in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, while the 2nd XII were left one man short following a late injury
Tennis tournament was ace
Rye Lawn Tennis Club's 87th annual tournament enjoyed four days of fine weather. The threatened rain on Saturday never arrived, as the 270 entrants battled for glory on the club’s magnificent grass courts
1st XI beaten but not down
Rye's 1st Xl started their innings well but the tail did not stand up. However, the 12-hour round trip had one consolation: 13 important points
Cricket 2nds in narrow defeat
The seconds were at home to Rottingdean seconds, in a match sponsored by The Gandhi Tandoori, fielding a team missing seven regulars due to holiday and work commitments
2nd XI lose to better team
Rye 2nds on Saturday went to league leaders Linfield where they came up against the best team they have faced this season
