Many remember him

Last weekend was a special time to remember those who fought and died to secure a safer future for all of us with services of remembrance across the country as a sign of respect for the fallen and for those serving in the armed forces.

Soldiers have for many years been a feature of Rye High Street, not in the literal sense but I’m sure many of you may remember Soldiers of Rye, a shop run by Chris Viner for many years specialising in beautifully crafted hand painted toy soldiers, model figures and militaria for enthusiasts and collectors. Chris finally retired in 2020 and he and his wife relocated to Scotland to enjoy a well-earned retirement together.

If you look at the comments at the bottom of the following article Chris wrote, Not a bad general really you will see how popular he was.

Chris was such a well respected and recognisable chap, always immaculately turned out and such a fine ambassador for Rye but I’m delighted to report that he and his wife are both looking younger and fitter than ever and I had the pleasure of bumping into them on the doorstep of The Lyon, The Witch and The Wardrobe on the High Street on Saturday. They were back in Rye visiting relatives and looking forward to the bonfire pageant and fireworks. I asked him if it was the Scottish air which was the secret to his continuing good health to which he answered, “No, it’s the whiskey!”.

Some things never change and as you can see from the photograph, they are probably still one of the best dressed couples in town.

  1. We miss Chris’ shop terribly. But thankfully, we have several of his knights, including the Black Prince and Henry, The Young King. My partner, Seb and I always enjoyed listening to him discuss his commissions.

Rye High Street simply isn’t the same without all the soldiers and knights in the window.

Thank you very much for this article. They look fabulous.
