The Martello Readers group, set up more than a decade ago, has found a new home at the Rye Bookshop on the High Street. The first meeting is on Monday January 25 at 5:30pm and the first book is Patrick Gayle’s “A Place Called Winter”. The Martello Readers was the reading group set up by Wendy and Terry Harvey which met monthly in their Martello Bookshop, very close to the current Rye Bookshop.
Martello Readers met monthly in the bookshop and since the store closed in 2013 have been leading a more peripatetic existence moving around people’s houses. It seems fitting that it should find its new home in the Rye Bookshop which opened in July last year.
In the past, the Martello Readers set a yearly reading list, built up from the 14 or so members suggestions. It included old and new books and there was often more than one book choice per month.
The first meeting of the new club will determine the arrangements going forward. It is expected that the meetings will be monthly. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served and all are welcome.
Meanwhile another book club is starting up the same week at Salts Farm Shop in East Guldeford. This one will meet on the last Thursday of the month at 10:30am. The initial meeting on January 28 will be a general discussion and the following month’s chosen book will be revealed.
