Smallhythe Place near Tenterden, built when Smallhythe was an important centre for shipbuilding, became actress Ellen Terry’s home – and this Saturday March 19 features the first of this year’s costume tours at 2:30pm.

The tours – and there will be one on 32 other occasions this year – provide an opportunity to come and learn about the delicate and lavish costumes once worn by Ellen Terry and her actor friends.

There are many fascinating stories attached to the clothes and also about what must now be done to conserve them.

For an entirely different experience your children can enjoy the Easter Egg Hunts from 11am-5pm each day from Friday March 25 to Monday March 28 over Easter weekend.

And, for yet another different experience, you can enjoy a theatrical romp through Shakespeare’s works at the Barn Theatre, in Smallhythe’s grounds, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of his death.

The Summer Theatre Company invites you to meet the best-known characters from his plays. Run by Peter Mould, the company puts on one play a year (aways Shakespeare) outdoors – and this year it is on April 23, at 7.30 pm.  Tickets £12 each; book online  https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk or call 0344 800 1895
