Sarah Seymour’s exhibition “Foreboding” which opened last Friday March 18 at the Rye Creative Centre is quite literally dazzling and Sarah’s use of charcoal, pastel, carborundum and glitter on paper and board is a skillful use of the mediums to depict the huge skies and drama of the storm clouds.
The largest piece is a triptych called “Gathering Storm” and together with the size, (each piece is 119 x 153cm) and the clever use of the mixed medium, it is so evocative of those dark and brooding skies it really makes one want to rush for home and be safe and cosy indoors.
Of the 17 paintings, some are shown in the Corridor as a taster and on into the Gallery are of different mediums to oil on board and different sizes. Some show the scale of the paintings with the inclusion of the
Dungeness power station’ s roof. The darkness of the sky with the hint of glitter reminded me of the Lennon/McCartney song “Lucy in the sky with diamonds”. The use of a little scattering of glitter is not the slightest bit schmaltzy but adds to the drama and intimidating quality of the work.
Sarah has been working towards this exhibition for some time and The Rye Creative Centre Gallery is a good space for a one woman show. I thoroughly recommend this show.
