A new regular correspondent in Rye News, Heidi Foster (above), kicks off on the “Culture” page with some comments about the Jazz Lounge at last year’s Jazz and Blues Festival, and she comments below on the Maritime Festival – reported in full on our “News” page because it is a weird and wonderful mix of all things maritime.

This includes lifeboats and pirates, as well as a lot of fundraising, very long queues for both the bar and the BBQ, and a lot of music, ranging from Rockitmen and others across the creek on the back of a lorry to a sedately seated and more old fashioned swing band and, of course, Rye’s ukuleles (one of which is played by Heidi, pictured above).

However, in her new role as a Rye News correspondent, she comments on all things fishy: “Another wonderful time was had by all last Sunday at the Maritime Festival on Strand Quay. Music, decorated boats, stalls with all sorts of things to buy (needed or not), and of course the lovely fish stall, as well as the burger and drinks bar which had continuous queues and we must say “Thank you” to the very few dedicated individuals who every year work incredibly hard to delight us with this festive day and bring people from all over into Rye.

“Personally, while it is great fun being part of the Rye Ukulele Experiment band and entertaining (hopefully) the visitors all afternoon with our medley of songs, I was exhausted at the end of the day. The feedback though was great. Thank you to one of the members who thoughtfully brought an excellent cocktail of wine/elderflower/fruit and soda – absolutely delicious. Now looking forward to next year!”

However, before then, Rye News expects to hear from her about this year’s Jazz Lounge (and what she drank), and other things happening in Rye. Rye News depends on volunteers, and we need more. To write. To take photos. To help produce Rye News each week. Each page has a “Get involved” panel on it, usually top right. Get in touch! Today! We need you – and Rye needs you.

All round Rye and surrounding villages there is a lot going on. But not everybody knows about it. And we do have a lot of visitors (who also read Rye News before coming here, and when they are thinking about coming here !). So Rye needs Rye News to keep people informed, and Rye News needs you – and Heidi too! Welcome. If you have a strong constitution Rye News has editorial meetings at 9:30 Saturday in the Queen Adelaide internet-pub just over the level crossing in Ferry Road to sort out what we think is going to happen in the coming week. We are often wrong.
