Easter Monday will see the first of this year’s “Under Winchelsea” cellar tours by the Winchelsea Archaeological Society. Starting at 2:00pm in Castle Street, the guided tour will explore some of the town’s medieval cellars, explain how and why they were built (not that everyone agrees), and also set out the turbulent early history of the now somnolent Ancient Town. You can also learn about some of the many myths that have emerged about Winchelsea’s past, including the highly improbable suggestion that it provided the plan for New York!
