In last week’s Rye News I wrote about a charity fund raising event in aid of the Martha Trust titled Wittersham to Monte Carlo which highlighted the forthcoming journey from Wittersham to Monte Carlo by two Wittersham locals for a very worthy cause.
A send-off was organised at the Swan in Wittersham for the two intrepid explorers, Andy Sills and Andy Barkel, who were accompanied by their trusty steed, a road legal car, bought locally for £200 and covered in handprints bearing signatures of sponsors and well-wishers. Flying proudly from the roof of the car was the Union Jack, at half mast.
They set themselves a target of at least £1,500 for the charity but when I spoke to them on Friday night, they had already raised £4,000 and are likely to raise even more by the time they return to the UK. A fantastic achievement with support from many local residents and sponsored by Korkers Sausages who also provided the hot dogs for the send-off, expertly cooked by Andy Barkel.
I will update our readers when they return, but the plan is to get to France via the tunnel and once in Monte Carlo they will be treated to a well-earned celebratory dinner, then flown back home. All the cars entering the event will be left in Monte Carlo and as they have fulfilled their purpose will be scrapped.
Keep an eye on Rye News for the next thrilling instalment of this epic journey in aid of such a worthy cause, well done team “That’s Andy”, a huge effort by you and all your supporters, good luck!
