Having a child with type 1 diabetes is definitely no fun as anyone who has had to deal with the disease will testify. Balancing lifestyle and preventive medication against this potentially deadly menace can easily dominate your life.
Speaking to members of Rye and Winchelsea Rotary Club, Jane Ripley, whose teenage son Joe has the disease, described in detail the lengths to which she goes to keep Joe’s blood sugar levels within an acceptable and life-preserving band. Working as a fundraiser for the type 1 charity Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Jane has helped to raise large amounts of money to help find a cure for this dreadful disease which affects more than 400,000 people in the UK, 29,000 of whom are children.
Also present at the talk were Liz and Ted Jackson, whose granddaughter Beth was diagnosed with the disease just over two years ago. During the summer of 2013 Rye Rotary in conjunction with the Inner Wheel Club of Rye and Winchelsea raised over £700 for the research foundation and retain an on-going interest in raising money for research into this growing affliction. Rotary president Robert Holland expressed his thanks to Jane, Liz and Ted for helping to keep club members up to date with their worthwhile efforts.
