A bright yellow cherry picker worked its way along the High Street on Wednesday, January 7, writes Kenneth Bird. Electrical engineers, Hannington Gilbert, spent most of the day dismantling Christmas lights and their fixings, causing temporary road closures along the way. The strings of white bulbs stretched across the street had become an eyesore, especially as just one section – from the top of Hilder’s Cliff to East Street – had worked. Half the bulbs were broken or filled with water, according to Clive Gilbert, and were unsafe.
