Over the weekend of June 5 to 7, schoolchildren from all over England, and a team from Gibraltar, took part in the semi final of this year’s English Primary School Chess Association (EPSCA) championship in Camber, writes Tony McLaughlin. Over the course of three days there were gambits, countergambits and castling galore as players tried to win through to the final.
EPSCA’s Glynis Purland, who with Ian Burford organises the event, explained that teams are organized into 26 zones in under 9, under 11 and plate competitions.
Eight teams in each age category qualified for this year’s final which will be held in Birmingham from June 30 to July 2.
