Stitch in time saves lives

The first get-together of the St Mary’s Knitwits and Sew’n Sews got off to a flying start on Monday morning, as nine ladies met in the church library area to knit and sort blanket squares for the Iraqi refugees. People from Rye and outskirts have generously donated hundreds of knitted squares and lots of wool, which means that about half a dozen blankets are ready to be despatched, with several lovely knitted garments, mittens, scarves and other items.

Janet Waddams, who is the local co-ordinator for the Iraqi appeal, is planning to include these on the next convoy of donated goods in the autumn. Gillian Roder would welcome some help with the sewing up and has issued a request for more squares in paler colours to highlight the many bright ones that have been knitted. Mothers’ Union members are also knitting angel pockets for premature babies as well as other baby items.

Coffee and biscuits were served by one of the interested but non-knitting men who came to see what was going on and it certainly livened up Monday morning for the many visitors who came to chat and take photographs. At this stage there are no plans to produce a calendar, but who knows?
