Visitors to Transition Rye’s recycle swap shop on Saturday May 31 at the St Mary’s Centre, took part in a triple-win event. Not only did those clearing out unwanted items benefit, but many came to pick up useful items for free, and at the same time helped the environment by reusing instead of throwing out and buying new.
This was the ninth recycle swap shop to be held in Rye, and over 400kg of items were brought to the event, of which 89% was collected by visitors or passed on for sale at charity shops, 6% was recycled, and just 5% went into general waste. Since Transition Rye started running the swap shops along with St Mary’s Ecology and the Tilling Green Residents Association, almost two and a half tonnes of items have been taken by visitors!
If you missed this one, put the dates of the next recycle swap shops in your diary: Saturday July 26 at Tilling Green Community Centre, and Saturday September 6 at St Mary’s Centre. More information can be found at www.transitionrye.org.uk.
