Danger at pedestrian crossing

Dear Editor
I did it on Monday – and I’ve just seen a young couple do it this morning (Thursday): step out on to the pedestrian crossing from the traffic island outside Jempson’s bakery without looking right. Because that’s what we normally do. The traffic is one way at this point and it comes from the left – but not while the current roadworks are in place. It’s one way coming from the right. Worse still: there is no sign warning pedestrians to look right.

I didn’t come to harm and neither did the young couple – though the car coming towards them didn’t stop. Luckily, they heard it and put their own brakes on. Maybe an older couple would not have been so alert and so lucky.
