Jessica braves the shave

When Jessica Neame of Neame Designs in Rye decided to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, she really did not expect the extent of public support she would receive.

Nor did Jessica expect it to be the coldest January week for three years, when she decided to have her shoulder-length glossy hair shaved off as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s “Brave The Shave” campaign.

The Queen’s Head in Landgate was packed to the rafters on Friday January 15 to witness Seb from Rye Barbers carrying out the final shave. This was after the length had been sectioned and carefully cut to send to The Little Princess Trust who supply free wigs for children with cancer.

Funds were boosted by Simon and Paul (local bartenders) who were motivated to shave their heads too, with Simon “gaining the edge” by opting for an eyebrow shave and bringing in an additional £50 towards the funds.

Jessica said: “Like lots of us, I’ve lost people I love to cancer and watched others battle it. I’ve always had ‘big’ hair, and frankly been a bit precious about it! But I decided that if I could raise a few quid for a charity that does so much to support people living with cancer, and their families, then it was well worth braving the shave.

“I’m doing this in memory of my wonderful Dad who died from prostate cancer, and my dear friend Paul who lost his battle recently. And also in support of my beautiful cousin Charlotte, who lost her hair during chemo, and has showed me just how I should ‘rock the bald look!’.

“Charlotte inspires me constantly to live life with love and positivity, and never give up the fight!”

On the night, Jessica and her co-shavers raised £1,000, bringing the total raised so far to over £4,700. Donations are still coming in, and it is not too late if you would like to support Jessica and Macmillan.  Alternatively cash donations can be made at Neame Designs, 13A Tower Street, Rye.
