On Saturday, November 18, the Rye Art Gallery held their open day for its winter show ‘Abundance’. Even though it was a very wet day many ventured out to visit the show displayed in the beautiful space of the gallery arranged over three floors. It will be available until January 2024.

On Saturday, 9 December there was another important event when the gallery showcased the Barefoot Opera, a very special evening, as part of the gallery’s fundraising events.

Artists in focus include Fred Cuming (painting shown, Albert Bridge, 1991, oil on board), Emma Turpin, (Eve light, oil on board), Jenny Pockley (Cloudburst-oil on copper) Colin Slee (main photo)

Also included is work by Melvyn Evans who conveys his love for the countryside representing both land and see through the considered use of colour and shape of his linocuts embodying a historic sense of place. Sally Cole whose work is well known, spends many hours outside in all weathers, simply looking and making marks in her countless sketch books holding her idea for the eventual paintings. Another well know artist who left us too soon is in the exhibition, Jacqueline Stanley, ARCA.

This is the final exhibition of 2023, then in 2024 there will be new works but also some of the artists from ‘Abundance’. Works will include ceramics, drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture.

It is well worth going to the website to be able to peruse all the art work currently held in the gallery.
