Brenda Hartill is described as one of the most prominent collagraph artists working today. She has run a studio in London and Spain but her main residence now and work space is near Rye, at Pound House, Udimore Road, TN31 6AY. In her forthcoming open weekends there will be many rare early works available to view including trainscapes, sunny Spanish images, new versions of early etchings as well as her new unique paintings.
Brenda is a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and is a collage artist. Her work explores the texture, pattern and light of the landscape and ranges from finely drawn figurative works to bold, heavily embossed abstract images. For the past 10 years she has been most interested in drawing imagery from ragged mountain erosion, the structure of the land and the dynamics of plant growth. She loves the strong light and shadow of southern Europe, remote New Zealand, where she was brought up, as well as the gentler greyness of the light in London. Many of her early more figurative works are still available and are well represented in the portfolio collections at the studio.
Brenda has increasingly become interested in painting, creating a series of embossed watercolour paintings as well as mixed-media collage paintings using oil paint and encaustic wax. Her recent work includes unique monoprints in muted colours, as well as black and white. Previously her main medium has been print, both etching and collagraph and she has written a book Collagraph and mixed printmaking (available on Amazon) which is now in its fifth printing. There is also a DVD available directly from the studio.
The dates for viewing Brenda’s work are this weekend, June 9/10/11 and next, June 16/17/18 For any further information please phone 07841 521712 or go to: brenda.hartill@gmail.com www.brendahartill.com.
