Crowning the weekend

The Fabulous Red Diesel feature at the Crown in Rye’s Ferry Road tonight, Friday April 19, from 8pm, as more and more pubs seem to be featuring bands to pull in the customers after some difficult times while Covid raged. RAGZ feature there on Saturday and a number of big screen sporting events are also on the way.

Over Easter, the Cinque Ports packed them in for footie on the big screen (which my Arsenal fan son watched) but I preferred the band in the garden with a great 60s repertoire to which I could dance. My son disowned me at that point.

This Saturday, April 20, also sees Freddie Hall at the Waterworks Brewery from 5pm to 7pm. For those who have yet to visit, the Brewery is on the left just beyond Rye’s hospital and Hub on the Hill (and has a large garden space with tables). Last Sunday featured Entertaining Mr Stone and followed on from the Cheese Club from 1pm-3 pm at the brewery’s parent Waterworks in Tower Street in town – and it was my first visit.

Last Wednesday April 17 the Queens Head in Landgate featured its Jam Night from 8.30pm and I’m not talking food. On a previous recent visit the Queens featured the mayor, mayoress and a previous mayor in the Rye Bay Crew belting out a lot of sea shanties – with chorus sheets handed out round the drinkers – so there is a lot of music around even when the festivals aren’t on.
