In recent years, Rye Arts Festival has added a selection of films to its across-the-arts programme and this year we celebrate the significant anniversaries of two great films, as well as a pair of British black and white classics that were filmed in the immediate area.
2023 marks the 90th anniversary of the release of probably the greatest monster movie ever made – King Kong. And we offer a rare chance to see this masterpiece shown where it was meant to be shown – the cinema! Our screening at the Kino on Monday, September 25 will be enhanced by a fascinating introduction to the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, by illustrator and Kong fan, Oliver Brooks.
On Friday, September 29, the golden anniversary of The Sting is marked by a screening at the Kino. The movie re-united Paul Newman and Robert Redford just after Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, and the renewed onscreen chemistry resulted in another box office and critical success, including the Oscar for Best Picture.
On Wednesday, September 20 Rye Arts Festival has teamed up with Rye Film Club for a special double bill of locally shot films that will be shown at Rye Community Centre. Feast your eyes on The Loves of Joanna Godden, starring Googie Withers, which tells the story (a book written by Sheila Kaye-Smith and screenplay by H.E. Bates) of a young woman who inherits a farm on Romney Marsh.
And after the interval The Quiet Woman is story of smuggling set in Rye Harbour, based around a pub run by the eponymous landlady played by Jane Hylton. She is escaping a former life but gets caught up in a smuggling enterprise.
