Film club summer season

As we run up to our 25th anniversary as a film club, which we’ll celebrate on June 2, we can reflect on the extremely valuable role the club has played in financially supporting Rye Community Centre over the years, raising many thousands of pounds from its efforts. We need to acknowledge all the hard work put in by committee members past and present and we look forward to another twenty-five years of great films at the centre.

All films are £5 to view and there is a licensed bar. Forthcoming showings include;

Friday, May 5 – The Lost King (2022 – 108 minutes, certificate 12)
In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a Leicester car park. The search had been orchestrated by amateur historian, Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. The Lost King is the true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. (7pm start, doors 6:30pm)

Friday, June 2 – Living (2022 – 102 minutes, certificate 12a)
This is one of the finest performances of Bill Nighy’s long career. As a humourless bureaucrat, overwhelmed at work and lonely at home, whose life takes a heartbreaking turn when a medical diagnosis tells him his time is short. Influenced by a local decadent and vibrant woman, he continues to search for meaning until a simple revelation gives him a purpose to create a legacy for the next generation. An award-winning Oscar-nominated drama based on acclaimed Japanese film maker Kurosawa’s ‘Ikiru’, the film also stars Aimee Lou Wood, recently starring in the hit TV show ‘Sex Education’. (7pm start, doors 6:30pm)

Friday, July 7 – A Man Called Ove (2016 – 116 minutes, certificate 15, subtitles)
We go back a few years to visit another Oscar-nominated film, this time from Sweden, starring Rolf Lassgard as an isolated ill-tempered retiree who spends his days between his wife’s grave and enforcing the rules of the housing development he lives in. That is until his new noisy neighbours move in including a heavily pregnant Iranian woman who drags him out of his dull life. The film was remade more recently under the name A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks. Although the later film is highly rated, you’ll perhaps agree with us that you can’t beat the original. (7pm start, doors 6:30pm)

Friday, August 11 – Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022
– 139 minutes, certificate 15)
Please note this film is on the second Friday of the month
Michelle Yeoh (Killing Eve) won an Oscar as best actress in a leading role for her part in the film, which landed a total of seven Oscars at the recent Academy Awards. It follows the story of a middle-aged Chinese immigrant, swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led. The film also stars Jamie Lee Curtis who won the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in the film. (7pm start, doors 6:30pm)
