Rye Arts Festival kicks off this Saturday, September 14, with a host of free events for families in the citadel and also at Tilling Green Community Centre.

At noon Ryebellion Drummers will get things started with a 15-minute session of loud, proud and rousing and rhythmic drumming outside the town hall, followed by a short cry by the town crier, the wonderful Paul Goring.

Then, from 12:30pm there will be street theatre happening around the citadel. The Ukulele Apothecary, will offer three shows, showing how the power of the uke can cure all ills. Come and get your medical diagnosis and have a laugh with a pair of maestros of the midget guitar.

And catch the Feasible Ferret Theatre company, who will be performing ‘Never a Gull Moment’. The fishmongers Cliff and Nestor, of The Prawn to be Wild Fish Co., are being followed around Rye by a flock of seagulls. How can they get rid of these irritating birds, or can a way be found for a peaceful co-existence? Find out from a show interactive puppetry, physical and verbal comedy.

Meanwhile over at Tilling Green Community Centre, starting at 2pm, there are three events which are free to enter, and take part in. At two o’clock Isabel Ryan will be holding a Captain Pugwash animation workshop – a hands-on, do-it-yourself experience for children of all ages!

And Lucy MacRae, who is a local circus teacher, will be holding a circus workshop, also starting at 2pm, which will focus on working with and in a hoop dangling in the air!

Then at 3pm Graham Ellis, an international circus director will be holding a juggling workshop. Ideal for children and adults with no experience, he will get you started with slow moving handkerchiefs. Go along and you and your children will quickly learn a new skill!
