Would you like to learn to draw and paint?

Local artist Anna Wilson-Patterson has spaces for new students at her popular art school. Anna’s Art School is a monthly drawing and painting class for adults. Beginners are very welcome.

In 2025 classes will be based both in Rye Harbour Sailing Club and also a new venue, Winchelsea Farm Kitchen.

Each month a subject is selected and the learning focused on techniques, such as line, tone, composition, texture and colour mixing. Themes include still life, portraits, interiors and working outdoors, weather permitting.

Seeking inspiration

Students are also encouraged to visit local art galleries and museums to research contemporary and historical works of art, with some lessons based on current exhibitions.

The maximum class size is 12 and following in the footsteps of artists such as Fred Cuming, Eric Ravilious and John Piper, students over the years have enjoyed painting a wealth of local subjects including the RNLI lifeboat house and Watch House at Rye Harbour. Other nearby locations include the nature reserve, beach, riverside and churchyard.

This year the Saturday class will be based in Winchelsea where we hope to find new subjects to inspire, such as St Thomas’ Church, Winchelsea Court Hall Museum, the community allotments, plus the wealth of dramatic views across Rye Bay.

Students attend either on the first Saturday of the month at Winchelsea or the first Wednesday of each month at Rye Harbour.

Each monthly study day is from 10am – 3pm and costs £42 with homework optional. The classes are serious but fun and there are lots of opportunities for sharing tips with others.

Booking in advance is essential, so please contact anna.wilsonpatterson@gmail.com for more information.
