On January 28, 2023, the Rye Art Gallery (RAG) opened to a new, first major exhibition of Karl Terry (RSMA), an established ‘en plein air’ artist who is well known locally and beyond. He attended the incredibly busy opening and there were quite a few purchases of his artwork. Red dots make sure that everyone knows they are already purchased, but all paintings can be enjoyed to the end of the exhibition which is on March 21, 2023.

Kart Terry has been documenting the ever-changing, amazing landscapes around Rye for many years. He paints mainly outdoors, independent of the weather. His most recent work is not just of Sussex but also North America and Morocco. It was only later in life that Karl discovered this new art path which changed his life drastically from a very traditional background. His dedication and commitment to hone his art as an outsider is apparent in this exhibition. Terry does not paint from photos but directly from his subject. Peter Brown who wrote the forward for the catalogue (available at RAG for £5) says: “So much passion and love go into these paintings, so when you buy one you are not only buying some beautiful oil on canvas but a board full of energy, courtesy of Karl Terry.”

Karl completed a marathon of 20 oil paintings in six days in the cold snow-filled Kent landscape at minus 8C. He said: ” Yes it was freezing but you feel so alive, don’t you.” Karl is loved, though uncomfortable when praised, and he is engaging, entertaining and genuine. His work is in gallery 1/2/3 while many other artists such as Sally Cole/Louis Turpin are still up in gallery 4/5/6.
