High Rise [15] 119 mins Dr Robert Laing moves into a new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. Adapted from J.G. Ballard’s visionary novel, directed by Ben Wheatley and starring Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons and Sienna Miller.
Screening at Kino Rye from Friday April 8 – Marguerite [15] 129 mins Subtitled 1921: not far from Paris, a party is being held at the famous Marguerite Dumont’s mansion. Nobody knows much about the mysterious Marguerite except that she has devoted her whole life to her passion: music. As she takes centre stage, she sings enthusiastically but terribly out of tune. When a provocative young journalist decides to write a rave article on her latest performance it gives her the courage she needs to follow her dream – to perform in front of a crowd of complete strangers. Featuring a powerhouse performance from Catherine Frot, Marguerite is a touching and light-hearted feast for the ears. A runaway success in its native France, and featuring music from Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi, Marguerite will live in your heart long after the credits roll. Giselle LIVE BALLET: Wednesday April 6 at 7:15pm Giselle is the quintessential romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. The ballet’s title role also offers one of the great challenges of the ballet repertoire, as Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, duped into love, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death. For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. In Peter Wright’s production, the dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved: the first act dramatized in rich, naturalistic detail and the second with a spectral, moonlit beauty. Starring Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov. Composed by Adolphe Adam, revised by Joseph Horovitz and choreographed by Marius Petipa after Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot
Classic world food and film nights in the Silver Room at the Kino. The first is on Thursday April 7 with paella at 7pm followed by Spanish classic thriller The Orphanage at 7:30pm. Lucia di Lammermoor LIVE OPERA: Monday April 25 at 7:15pm Lucia di Lammermoor tells the story of an ongoing feud between two families in 17th-century Scotland that has terrible consequences for two young lovers. It contains what is undoubtedly one of opera’s most poignant and gripping mad scenes, and is regarded as one of Donizetti’s finest works. The opera has not been seen at the Royal Opera House in more than a decade, so this new production by Katie Mitchell will be a particularly important and exciting event. Conducted by Daniel Oren and starring Diana Damrau and Charles Castronovo.
BFI presents: Richard III Thursday April 28 at 7:30pm Marking 400 years since the death of Shakespeare, Richard III (1995) returns to cinemas across the UK on April 28 as a one-day event cinema release. The new 2K restoration of the classic adaptation starring Sir Ian McKellen with Annette Bening, Maggie Smith, Nigel Hawthorne, Jim Broadbent, Kristen Scott Thomas, Robert Downey Jr. and Dominic West is preceded by an exclusive documentary and followed by a post-film discussion with its screenwriter and star, Sir Ian McKellen, and its director, Richard Loncraine, broadcast live from BFI Southbank.
