Local heroes step up

The run up to any theatre production can be stressful and Rye Players faced a serious challenge when director Mike Nower took a tumble running for a train. He’d designed the set for Blithe Spirit but with an arm and a leg temporarily out of commission, there was no way he could build it as planned.

We’re a small group, dependent on support from our members and the audiences who enjoy our shows. But for many of us, our ladder climbing days are over. Turning to social media, we put out an appeal for help to construct the set on Saturday. A day later we’d heard from the four heroes who are about to save the day.

Take a bow: Phil Clarke, recently retired Head of Production at RADA and with a theatre pedigree to admire. Guy Harris, (the name you’ve seen on election posters) who will be bringing his own tools and willingness to pitch in. Jeani Rogers, proprietor of the iconic Camber Beach Guest House, and Del Smith, sound and lighting guru and veteran of the local theatre scene.

Marvel could have written it!

We are so thankful and we look forward to creating the room where it happens on June 28 and 29. Tickets for Blithe Spirit are on sale now at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/rye-players

  1. Great news! We’re coming back to Rye on 5-9 September – no chance of a show by the Rye Players at that time?

    • We’re doing a play in the Rye Arts Festival on September 28. It’s called Holmes Under the Hammer and it’s a hoot. Sorry it’s after your visit but I hope you have fun,

  2. Many thanks to Phil Clarke for jumping in and leading the team of Rye Players to build our set! His experience was invaluable in planning the set from a small model and directing tasks.

After a long day of activity, the set was complete in readiness for Blithe Spirit including lighting. Team stood down and we all enjoyed a pint in the a Waterworks.
