Bowler Crab, the outdoor theatre company based at Three Oaks, hosted a very interesting show and discussion on Saturday April 29 at the Mermaid. The company director, Stephen John and actor Eleanor Stourton took us through different versions of scenes from Macbeth, interpreting the text in different ways – for example sometimes Lady Macbeth was the dominant figure, sometimes she was weaker and less certain.
Stephen explained how, unlike modern plays, stage directions were very unusual in Shakespeare’s plays. They consist almost exclusively of dialogue, leaving a great deal of room for different interpretations which partly explains why they are so popular.
Macbeth was the first play put on by Bowler Crab in 2015. More recently the company has come in from the cold, which can be a scourge of outdoor theatre. This summer its latest production Much Ado About Nothing will be performed outside at Half House Farm at Three Oaks throughout June, indoors at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare, Ringmer on July 1 and indoors at St John’s Centre, Bexhill on July 8. More information can be found at their website.
