Rye is promised a rare treat this weekend as a fully-professional production of Stephen Sondheim’s Marry Me A Little comes to Rye Community Centre on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, June 9 and 10. The production comes fresh from a three-week run in London, where the show and its two lead singers/actors Stephanie Schmalzle and Keith Merrill have picked up some great reviews.
No finer and more critical a critic than the Sondheim Society, said: “Sondheim’s intimate two-hander [is] sensitively and intelligently realised in Alisdair Kitchen’s production.” And the Musical Theatre Review wrote: “Merrill is highly entertaining to watch and it’s impossible to not be glued to Schmalzle.”
This is the perfect show for a Rye audience, and features some of Sondheim’s greatest and most loved songs from Follies, A Little Night Music and Company. The production is directed by Alisdair Kitchen who has brought some wonderful opera to Rye Arts Festival in recent years.
The show starts at 7:30pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday at Rye Community Centre, Conduit Hill. Tickets are just £15 and can be purchased from Rye Grammar School Records, online at www.ryeartsfestival.org.uk, or on the door.
